A Day of Service Turns a House Into a Home

A house becomes a home through more than furniture, paint and decorations. It becomes a home when people come together to create a place where a family can feel safe, welcomed and supported.

That spirit of service brought Faithworks, Family Promise Winchester Area and Edward Jones Region 275 together to prepare the first home connected to Family Promise’s Next Step Program.

The Next Step Program is designed to help families move from housing instability toward greater independence and long-term stability. The home will provide a local mother and her young son with a safe place to live as she continues working, pursuing her education and building a more secure future for her family.

Edward Jones Region 275 Answers the Call

As the family’s move-in approached, the house still needed important finishing touches. Edward Jones Region 275 answered the call by organizing a community day of service.

Volunteers completed final painting and caulking, cleaned the home inside and outside, planted flowers, installed curtain rods, changed light bulbs, hung pictures and added decorations.

Individually, these may appear to be small tasks. Together, they helped transform the house into a warm and welcoming home.

“This home is a tangible example of what can happen when the community comes together,” said Emma Bridges, a Family Promise volunteer and financial coach.

Emma works with families to help them better understand their finances and make informed decisions that support greater stability. Her service reflects the broader purpose of the Next Step Program: providing families with both practical resources and personal support as they move forward.

Community Partnership in Action

This project brought together people with different skills, professional backgrounds and connections to the Winchester community.

Sandi Webster serves as president of the Family Promise Winchester Area Board and as program director for Faithworks. Through both roles, she has seen how strong community partnerships can connect families with practical assistance, encouragement and opportunities.

Faithworks volunteers also participated in the workday. Shalini Mikos, founder of Higher Social, LLC and Faithworks’ contracted marketing consultant, volunteered as part of her personal commitment to the organization’s faith-centered mission. Her husband, Ron Mikos, a United Airlines pilot, also served as a Faithworks volunteer.

Additional volunteers, businesses and community supporters contributed to the project but were not present for the group photograph. Their work is an important part of this story.

Meaningful community impact rarely belongs to one person or organization. It happens when people recognize a need, offer what they can and work together toward a shared purpose.

More Than a Day of Service

Painting, cleaning, planting and decorating accomplished more than completing a list of projects.

Each task communicated something to the family preparing to move into the home:

You are welcomed.

You are supported.

You do not have to take this next step alone.

Faithworks is grateful for Family Promise Winchester Area, Edward Jones Region 275 and every volunteer, business and community partner who helped prepare the home.

Their service demonstrates what is possible when community partnerships move beyond conversation and into meaningful action.
